Wie Hires New Caddie
Michelle Wie hired a new caddy this weekend. His name is Andrew Lano. He caddied for Kenny Perry over the last 20 years. Wie fired her former caddie, Greg Johnston, earlier this month after she finished in a tie for 26th place in the Women's British Open.
Hawai'i's first elected governor Quinn dies
Hawaii's first elected governor, William F. "Bill" Quinn died Monday at age 87 apparently from complications due to pneumonia. His wife Nancy said he lived a very full life. Quinn, a Republican, was first appointed to serve as governor of Hawai'i in 1957. "He was fine and alert almost to the very end," Nancy Quinn said. Services have not yet been set.
Lowest SAT
The College Board reports that the US high school class of 2006 got the lowest SAT scores in 31 years, possibly because the test was changed to include higher-level math and eliminate analogies...Such as "Today's students are to previous students as George W. Bush is to George H.W. Bush"...But analogies are to the SAT as cheating is to higher-level math classes!...The students said, "31 years isn't so bad; it's only a quarter of a century."
Restaurants Serve Up Aid To Katrina Victims
For one day, on Tuesday, Big City Diner made a donation to help Hurricane Katrina victims every time someone ordered a dessert. Last year nearly 100 restaurants statewide participated. This year only four Big City Diner locations and a handful of other restaurants are making contributions that included Ryan's Grill, Kincaid's, Palomino and Buca Di Beppo.
Robin Hood Held For Ransom
Robin Hood is being held for ransom in Hungary. The BBC just finished shooting an edgy, "contemporary style" 13-part "Robin Hood" miniseries, and the master tapes were apparently stolen by a Hungarian extra who's a member of a gang that's demanding $2.5 million for their return. The Daily Mirror quotes a BBC source as saying it's "an absolute disaster; there's no back-up recording." But officially, the BBC called it "inconvenient."
Car In Repair Shop For 6 Years
Argentine retiree Jose Orono told Terras Noticias Populares that he's been waiting to get his car out of the repair shop for six years. He took in his 1970 Fiat for minor repairs and a paint job in 2000. A week later, the mechanic said he needed two more weeks. Then he started making excuses: his aunt died, he was burglarized, etc. Six years later, Orono is still waiting for his Fiat to be fixed. He said, "I wanted to be patient because I know his wife and kids, but enough is enough!"
Airline Security Loses Woman's Leg
Disabled New Zealand athlete Kate Horan, who holds the world record for the 400 meters, is a victim of botched airline security. She was taking British Airways from London to Amsterdam and was told her specially-designed, $8,400 prosthetic leg could no longer be carried on but had to be checked. In the midst of the bomb threat chaos, the airline misplaced it. Her leg is in a pile of 20,000 misplaced bags at Heathrow Airport and they don't know where. She has a race in Amsterdam on Sunday.
