State DOT launches pedestrian master plan for Hawaii
The state Department of Transportation says it has begun work on a comprehensive statewide pedestrian master plan. Department officials said yesterday that the purpose of the plan is to increase pedestrian safety and mobility, while reducing pedestrian-related traffic fatalities. DOT Director Brennon Morioka says the plan will establish infrastructure and safety standards, and also include public education and law enforcement strategies to maximize overall effectiveness. The plan identifies the most critical needs of Hawaii's highway system, including safety improvements or repairs. Officials say it also prioritizes problems, providing guidance on the most efficient and effective use of federal, state and local resources.
