Graffiti Taggers Strike Again
Tagging & graffiti has always been a problem in a lot of communities. Last weekend dozens of community volunteers cleaned up graffiti in a Waipahu neighborhood. The clean-up was organized by the Honolulu Police Department's Weed & Seed Program. But the taggers have struck again! Residents and volunteers who helped in the effort are frustrated. A wall located on Hiapo Street was one area volunteers painted over. Volunteers say graffiti in the area is getting worse; they see the same markings all the time. Some feel there's been an increase in graffiti with Furlough Fridays in motion. One idea that came up on putting a positive spin on graffiti includes painting murals. City Councilmember Donovan Dela Cruz, who was one of the many volunteers who helped with the clean up in Waipahu, said murals have been painted throughout Wahiawa and other parts of the island and the murals are not touched. A bill is moving through the State House to punish graffiti taggers. If passed, the bill would require a convicted tagger to remove the graffiti within 30 days of being sentenced and perform community service for the length of their probation period.
